About Course

Description This AACP approved CPD course is designed for practicing chartered physiotherapists who have previously undertaken a recognised acupuncture foundation course and wish to develop their practical skills in the clinical treatment of both acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain through the application of electroacupuncture. Participants should be MCSP and HCPC registered and have already successfully undertaken a recognised acupuncture foundation course. Training Objectives:  Knowledge To reintroduce the participant to: • The concept of the analgesic mechanisms of acupuncture. • The issues related to the health and safety aspects of the clinical application of electro-acupuncture. • The application of electro-acupuncture and its role in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. Skills To be able to: • Explain the analgesic mechanisms of both manual and electro-acupuncture. • Safely and effectively utilise electro-acupuncture points for the purpose of the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. • Clinically reason the application of electro-acupuncture in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. • Integrate electro-acupuncture into the complete management of musculoskeletal pain in a clinical physiotherapeutic setting. Understanding To understand: • The analgesic mechanisms of electro-acupuncture. • The health and safety issues related to the treatment of musculoskeletal pain with electro-acupuncture. • The clinically reasoned use of electro-acupuncture in the clinical physiotherapeutic setting. These objectives will be achieved through a variety of teaching strategies including lectures, tutorials, seminars, action groups, problem-based learning scenarios, clinical reasoning based case studies and practical needling situations. Learning will also be supported by the course study manual and the use of research-based teaching materials and methods. Students will be provided with the following resources for their use on the course Course manual, handouts and a selection of acupuncture needles. Jon graduated in 1999 from Keele University achieving a first class BSc in physiotherapy and began his acupuncture training in 2000. In 2003 he became an advanced member of the AACP and in 2004 he was awarded his post-graduate MSc in acupuncture from Coventry University. Since graduating he has worked in a variety of roles within the NHS, private sector and professional sport. Jon is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, an accredited AACP tutor and a member of the board of Directors of the AACP. He delivers foundation courses and CPD within the private sector and NHS and has also had his work published in the Journal of Chinese Medicine. He has previously been an MSc award leader at Staffordshire University, is the external assessor for Glyndwr University’s acupuncture BSc and also acts as consultant and sessional lecturer to a number of Universities throughout the UK. He now splits his time between delivering acupuncture training and the clinical practice of physiotherapy and acupuncture. He is also a consultant to physiotherapists in Team GB, the FA and Premiership Football Clubs.
