About Course

Description This AACP approved CPD course is designed for practicing chartered physiotherapists who wish to expand their practical skills in utilising acupuncture in the clinical management of headaches and migraines. Participants should be MCSP and HCPC registered and have already successfully undertaken a recognised acupuncture foundation course. Aims  To develop participant’s theoretical knowledge of acupuncture and its role in the clinical management of headaches and migraines  To develop participant’s practical skills in the differentiation of common headaches and migraine presentations. Training Objectives Knowledge To introduce the participant to:  The proposed aetiology and pathology of migraines.  The proposed aetiology and pathology of multiple headache presentations.  The differential diagnosis of common headache presentations.  The mechanisms of acupuncture in relation to the management of headaches and migraines. Skills To be able to:  Safely and effectively employ acupuncture in the management of migraines.  Safely and effectively employ acupuncture in the management of multiple headache presentations.  Integrate acupuncture into the complete physiotherapeutic management of headaches and migraines. Understanding To understand:  The potential mechanisms underlying the development of multiple headache presentations.  The proposed mechanisms by which acupuncture can support the management of headaches and migraines.  The health and safety issues related to the management of headaches and migraines with acupuncture.  The use of acupuncture and its integration within the management of headaches and migraines. These objectives will be achieved through a variety of teaching strategies including lectures, tutorials, seminars, action groups, problem-based learning scenarios, clinical reasoning based case studies and practical needling situations. Learning will also be supported by the course study manual and the use of research-based teaching materials and methods. Students will be provided with the following resources for their use on the course: Course manual, handouts and a selection of acupuncture needles The course runs from 09:00 to 17:00 (7 hours CPD). Instructor

Jon graduated in 1999 from Keele University achieving a first class BSc in physiotherapy and began his acupuncture training in 2000. In 2003 he became an advanced member of the AACP and in 2004 he was awarded his post-graduate MSc in acupuncture from Coventry University. Since graduating he has worked in a variety of roles within the NHS, private sector and professional sport. Jon is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, an accredited AACP tutor and a member of the board of Directors of the AACP. He delivers foundation courses and CPD within the private sector and NHS and has also had his work published in the Journal of Chinese Medicine. He has previously been an MSc award leader at Staffordshire University, is the external assessor for Glyndwr University’s acupuncture BSc and also acts as consultant and sessional lecturer to a number of Universities throughout the UK. He now splits his time between delivering acupuncture training and the clinical practice of physiotherapy and acupuncture. He is also a consultant to physiotherapists in Team GB, the FA and Premiership Football Clubs.
